چکیده

Introduction: The initial in-situ chemical analysis of the four soil samples delivered to the Wet Chemistry Laboratory (WCL) provided concentrations of the soluble ionic species in the soil along with the pH and conductivity. Even though at first the results appeared to present a simple picture of the soluble soil chemistry , it has become clearly evident that the analyses were complicated by an unplanned titration of the soil/water mixture with barium chloride, the presence of chemical species whose signal was convoluted into other sensor readings, and the effects of temperature and noise. The combined effect of these interferences has put into question the concentrations and identity of the ionic species that were directly measured. Use of such incorrect values in conjunction with chemical speciation modeling programs will result in misinterpretation of the parent salt composition of the soil analyzed by the Phoenix WCL. The WCL on board the phoenix lander performed the first comprehensive wet chemical analysis of the soil on Mars, during the summer of 2008. Each WCL consisted of a lower cell whose walls were lined with an array of sensors and an upper assembly for adding water, reagents, soil, and stirring. The sensor array included ion selective electrodes (ISE) for K

POLAR MARS BIOHABITABILITY ASSESSMENT OF THE WET CHEMISTRY ANALYSIS ON THE 2007 PHOENIX MARS SCOUT MISSION. S.M.M.Young,

Introduction: The 2007 Phoenix Mars Scout lander launched on 4 August 2007 and landed on 25 May 2009 at the northern polar latitude of 68.22°N, and longitude 234.25°E (areocentric) [1]. The landing site was a field of sand wedge polygonal terrain [2,3]. For 152 sols the mission made extensive atmospheric and ground measurements. Analyses included interacting with and excavating the Mars regolit...

Comparative Analysis of Image Denoising Methods Based on Wavelet Transform and Threshold Functions

There are many unavoidable noise interferences in image acquisition and transmission. To make it better for subsequent processing, the noise in the image should be removed in advance. There are many kinds of image noises, mainly including salt and pepper noise and Gaussian noise. This paper focuses on the research of the Gaussian noise removal. It introduces many wavelet threshold denoising alg...

Improved Adaptive Median Filter Algorithm for Removing Impulse Noise from Grayscale Images

Digital image is often degraded by many kinds of noise during the process of acquisition and transmission. To make subsequent processing more convenient, it is necessary to decrease the effect of noise. There are many kinds of noises in image, which mainly include salt and pepper noise and Gaussian noise. This paper focuses on median filters to remove the salt and pepper noise. After summarizin...

A Common-Factor Approach for Multivariate Data Cleaning with an Application to Mars Phoenix Mission Data

Data quality is fundamentally important to ensure the reliability of data for stakeholders to make decisions. In real world applications, such as scientific exploration of extreme environments, it is unrealistic to require raw data collected to be perfect. As data miners, when it is infeasible to physically know the why and the how in order to clean up the data, we propose to seek the intrinsic...
